Hamilton’s international airport has a new 70,000 sq. ft. cargo facility, built to accommodate the rising needs of the airport’s growing air freight business, says a news release from Infrastructure Canada. The project includes multiple truck docks, dedicated merchandise and courier handling, and secured customs areas.

It also includes temperature-controlled systems for climate sensitive goods including fruits and vegetables, flowers and pharmaceutical products.

The Ontario and Canadian governments committed $8 million for the project under the Provincial-Territorial Base Fund.

TradePort International Corporation, the organization responsible for managing and development at the airport, contributed $4 million, bringing the total cost to $12 million

“We’re thrilled with the new cargo center and look forward to the opportunities it will help facilitate at John C.Munro Hamilton International Airport,” said the airport’s president and CEO Frank Scremin in a statement.”This facility will allow us to maintain Hamilton International Airport ‘s dominant presence in overnight express cargo segment in Canada, and create new opportunities to diversify the types of goods that can be processed through the airport.”

The release says the airport is one of Canada’s busiest for domestic air cargo distribution.
