Edmonton-based design and engineering services firm Stantec has been selected to lead Toronto’s third consecutive bridge program management assignment. The assignment project valued at $16 million will include bridge assessment, preliminary design, detailed design, and contract administration for the rehabilitation of twenty-eight bridges over five years.

Toronto launched the program aimed at keeping bridge infrastructure current in 2017 and awarded Stantec the first two contracts.

Stantec has provided preliminary design, detailed design, and construction administration for the rehabilitation or replacement of sixty-three bridges.

The work has involved rehabilitation of major thoroughfare bridges including the Don Mills Road bridge over Don Valley Parkway, the Lawrence Avenue Bridge over the Don Valley Parkway, and the Kitchener GO Rail over Bloor Street. Once complete, all three assignments of the program will have rehabilitated more than ninety bridges.

“As Toronto continues to experience urban growth, bridges are an essential part of keeping the city connected,” said Scott Leitch, bridge leader for Ontario and Atlantic Canada at Stantec. “By maximizing the life cycle of the many bridges throughout the Toronto area, we are taking an efficient approach to safeguard transportation infrastructure for the traveling public.”

For this latest assignment, Stantec says its project team will begin by assessing each bridge site to develop practical, cost-effective rehabilitation solutions. The team will then provide preliminary design, detailed design, and construction administration for every bridge.

Throughout the process including data analysis, design, and construction oversight, the team will balance life-cycle costs, reduce community and environmental impacts, provide for public safety, and improve long-term durability, while meeting regulatory standards and stakeholder needs, the company says.

Stantec has a longstanding relationship with the City of Toronto, having recently led design efforts for replacement of two bridges crossing Black Creek at Jane Street and Scarlett Road and has supported multiple phases and sections of the elevated Gardiner Expressway Rehabilitation Project.

Stantec’s bridge team has supported the delivery bridge replacement, rehabilitation, design, and construction projects across North America including the Mike O’ Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge in Nevada. The company also led the design and construction of a new five- span, 500-metre-long bridge adjacent to the Stoney Trail Bridge over the Bow River in Calgary.
