The City of Toronto marked the opening of the newly redeveloped St. Lawrence Market North building last weekend, a historic space that has hosted the market since 1803.
The redevelopment has enhanced community spaces for vendors, visitors, and shoppers, and improved local infrastructure.
On May 15, 2019, City Council approved the awarding of a contract for the construction of the new St. Lawrence Market North building at 92 Front St. to The Buttcon Limited/The Atlas Corporation Joint Venture. Construction of the new market began in July 2019.
The five-story, multi-use facility with courtrooms and administrative offices on the upper floors, a Market Hall on the ground floor, and four levels of underground parking. It will be open year-round to host events, exhibitions, and other programming.
Since July 2015, the Saturday Farmers’ Market has been operating at 125 The Esplanade while the St. Lawrence Market North building was under redevelopment. Work on the project began in 2016.
Renovations combine historical elements with modern amenities, ensuring the continued success of the Saturday Farmers’ Market. The redevelopment also supports local businesses, boosts tourism, and improves accessibility, making the market more inviting for both locals and tourists.
“The new St. Lawrence Market North building brings fresh life to the historic district, while preserving the tradition of the Saturday Farmers’ Market,” said Councillor Chris Moise (Toronto Centre). “I look forward to seeing the community thrive as the new North Market becomes a central hub for the Love Local movement.”
