PCL Constructors Canada Inc. says it has received three safety achievement awards from the Ontario General Contractor’s Association (OGCA) at its inaugural safety awards ceremony held on Sept. 30. “We were excited to create a standalone safety awards event this year,” said OGCA president Clive Thurston.
“We need to celebrate safety as an industry and each of us should be proud of our achievements, because as a group, OGCA contractors are the safest contractors in the country.”
Awards were presented to companies who recorded the lowest accident frequencies. PCL’s distinctions included the Category I, 2015 Milestone, and Distinguished Achievement in Health and Safety awards.
Selected from amongst 11 other OGCA members who individually achieved more than 200,000 hours worked without a lost time incident, PCL was recognized as the Category I Winner for outstanding safety performance in achieving the most cumulative injury-free derived hours worked, with a yearly average of 2,414,825 hours over a three-year period.
In recognition of achieving more than one million consecutive derived hours worked without a lost time injury, PCL was presented with the 2015 OGCA Milestone Award. The total consecutive injury-free derived hours worked by PCL in 2015 was 2,367,379.
In addition, PCL was presented with a Distinguished Achievement in Health and Safety award for achieving Zero Injury Frequency. This was in recognition of a three-year period between 2013 and 2015, in which PCL accumulated 7,346,369 hours without a lost time injury.
Companies honoured at the event were also recognized by the Ministry of Labour for acting as industry leaders in demonstrating their commitment to workplace health and safety.
“We are proud that our passion and commitment to safety are being recognized by the industry,” said Jim Dougan, PCL president of Eastern Canadian operations. “More importantly, by working as partners, and not just individual companies, we fully believe that together we will achieve our industry’s vision of ensuring that everyone returns home safely, every day. Congratulations to everyone involved.”
