Construction on a long-awaited $7.5-million revitalization of Towne Square is expected to begin later this month, with the Town of Oakville promising a phased approach designed to keep downtown businesses, residences and activities accessible throughout the project.

Work is tentatively scheduled to begin the week of Sept. 14, 2026, and is expected to be completed by September 2027. The project’s general contractor is CRCE Construction Group.

The project will transform Towne Square, in the heart of Downtown Oakville, into a more accessible, vibrant and welcoming public space. The square has served as a community gathering place for more than 35 years, supporting local businesses and hosting events and activities.

“This revitalization will create an even more welcoming and vibrant gathering place for residents, visitors, and local businesses to enjoy for years to come,” Mayor Rob Burton said.

The reconstruction was originally approved in 2018 but was paused in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In October 2025, Oakville council approved another pause to allow for additional consultation with downtown businesses and the community.

That consultation helped shape the “Optimal Phasing Plan” approved by council in May 2026.

The plan divides construction into phases intended to minimize disruption while maintaining access to the downtown core. Town staff will also work with businesses, residents and community partners throughout construction to provide updates and address impacts as they arise.

Active construction areas will be enclosed with decorative hoarding, while designated entry and exit points will provide access to businesses. Wayfinding signs will direct visitors to open businesses and amenities.

Construction staging and worker parking will be moved off-site to reduce congestion, while extended work hours will be limited to periods when they are necessary. Town staff will also take measures to manage construction noise and dust.

A pause in construction is tentatively planned for November 2026 to accommodate the holiday season, with work expected to resume in the first quarter of 2027, weather permitting.

Once complete, the revitalized Towne Square will feature amphitheatre-style seating for community gatherings and events, a distinctive water feature, raised planters, new trees and enhanced landscaping.

Plans also call for new seating areas, an updated central lawn, decorative lighting and accessible paving throughout the square.

The Millennium Tower Clock currently located in Towne Square will be removed and placed in storage before construction begins. It will be returned once the project is complete.
