Jury announced for 2023 Mississauga Urban Design Awards

The jury for the 2023 Mississauga Urban Design Awards was announced last week. This year’s ceremony and celebration takes place on September 21, 2023.

“Each year, the Mississauga Urban Design Awards jury has the privilege of reviewing all the nominations, which demonstrate design excellence in Mississauga; this year, they have got their work cut out for them with a large number of transformative projects to review,” said Sharon Mittmann, manager, urban design, planning and building department. “Jury members are recommended by City staff and invited to participate based on experience and expertise in their field.

“They’ll spend the next few months evaluating the submissions to make some hard decisions about which ones will receive an award.”

2023 Mississauga Urban Design Awards Jurors:

Caroline Kim, Senior Associate, Bousfields Inc.

  • Kim is a licensed architect with a Master’s Degree in Urban Design and a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture. Caroline has extensive experience in the development review at the City of Toronto and her management role for Waterfront Toronto (Quayside plan)

Jane Welsh, Project Manager, Environment, City of Toronto

  • Welsh has a Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Guelph and a Master’s of Science in Planning from the University of Toronto. She is a fellow of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects, past-president of the OALA and Chair of the CSLA Committee on Climate Adaptation.

Lesley Pavan, Senior Consultant, Perry Group Consulting

  • Pavan has more than 30 years of municipal planning experience, working in smaller and larger municipalities. As a former City of Mississauga employee, and has worked I development approvals, environmental planning, leading transportation projects and as director of development and design, was responsible for development approvals, the Zoning By-law and design projects.

Dr. Nicholas Brandon, Associate Medical Officer of Health, Peel Public Health

  • Brandon is a Public Health and Preventive Medicine physician and one of the associate medical officers of Health at Peel Public Health. He is also an assistant professor in Clinical Public Health at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.

Tara Marchelewicz, architectural designer at DUBBELDAM Inc. Architecture + Design, Toronto

Marchelewicz studied architecture, art history, and psychology at the University of Toronto and went on to graduate from the Yale School of Architecture with a Master of Architecture in 2018.

This year’s program received 24 submissions. The jury will be tasked with selecting the winners from an impressive list of nominations. Awards and judging criteria are available online.

The Mississauga Urban Design Awards also includes a People’s Choice Award, which is given to the project that receives the most public support through online voting.
