Hanson Brick, one of North America’s largest brick manufacturers, has been selected to provide 55,000 bricks for New Horizon Homes’ latest project: The Haven Community. Construction on the four-story, 138-unit, mid-rise condominium, located at 5317 Upper Middle Road in Burlington, is currently underway with a projected completion date of summer 2013.
Hanson Brick was selected by New Horizon Homes because of its sustainable building practices and an innovative idea to repurpose shale from the Haven building site to create custom bricks for the community, the company said in a news release. New Horizon Homes provided Hanson with 23,000 tons of shale excavated from the building site for the creation of 55,000 natural-coloured, clay bricks, which are being used the project.“Repurposing the shale from the Haven building site is both an economical and sustainable building practice, as Hanson will not have to tap into other natural resources to produce the bricks for this project,” the release said.
“We’re excited to be able to collaborate with New Horizon Homes on their vision of producing and using sustainable construction materials on the Haven project,” said Frank Corrado, vice president – sales of Hanson Brick’s north region. “By re-purposing the shale already excavated from the site, we were able to create a customized brick that is strong, reliable and sustainable.”
Along with the custom design, these bricks require very little maintenance when compared to other building materials resulting in an attractive, long-lasting and economically-efficient solution for the Haven Community.
“We aim to provide the best product for all our clients’ projects. Not only are the Haven bricks beautiful, but they are also practical,” said Corrado. “These bricks are a true reflection of the qualities our company is based on: innovation, efficiency and sustainability.”
