Hamilton City Council has taken a “crucial step” to advance the Jamesville redevelopment project, which will see the construction of 2.2 hectares of affordable housing on the city’s north side.
In a statement last Wednesday (April 24), the city said it is moving ahead with the development by providing CityHousing Hamilton with the support required to make it possible for the project to proceed.
The city says it approved the development application for the Jamesville project in August 2022, but the project was paused by the Ontario Land Tribunal when CN Rail filed an appeal in September 2022, which raised concerns about noise from the project.
The city said the developer has now put forward a revised plan that addresses those concerns and also includes more trees and green space.
“Housing is a human right,” Mayor Andrea Horwath said in a statement. “I’ve said this repeatedly – the creation of affordable housing along Rapid Transit Corridors is a priority. It is my priority, it is the City’s priority, and it is the province’s priority.”
Horwath said the city is doing everything it can to move the development forward and that the revised plan “will ultimately be considered by the Ontario Land Tribunal.”
The city said it is also working with CityHousing Hamilton as the housing provider and the developer “to negotiate the implementation of official plan and zoning by-law amendments that will ultimately be considered by the Ontario Land Tribunal.”
The Jamesville redevelopment is expected to include 2.2 hectares of affordable housing, 1.2 hectares of commercial space, 1.2 hectares of greenspace and a new community park.
