Greener transportation goals get boost from new strategy

The City of Mississauga council has endorsed the proposed region-wide Peel Zero Emission Vehicle Strategy aiming to:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution from the transportation sector
  • Improve business and resident knowledge on the benefits and costs of ZEVs
  • Increase ZEV driving experiences, availability and ownership
  • Enhance planning processes and access to charging infrastructure
  • Promote local job creation and economic development

Changes were also made to the off-street parking regulations in the Zoning By-law to require a minimum number of electric vehicle-ready parking spaces in new developments and redevelopments.

“Transportation accounts for 33 per cent of the City’s greenhouse gas emissions, and the strategy will enhance the infrastructure our city needs to support the transition to zero emission vehicles. Our work to support electric vehicles in our city complements our broader actions to support sustainable transit, including public transit, cycling and walking,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie.

The ZEV strategy was developed in collaboration with the Region of Peel, City of Brampton, Town of Caledon, Credit Valley Conservation and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority through the Peel Climate Change Partnership.

Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP), has recently provided $525,000 to the Region of Peel to install 69 Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers.

Mississauga will continue to collaborate with the Region of Peel and the Government of Canada to install more EV chargers in selected parks, sports fields and community centres.

The ZEV strategy is an important step in addressing the City’s transportation-based emissions and reaching the 2030 GHG emission reduction targets.
