Ontario-based Farm Boy 2012 Inc. has announced plans to open its next fresh market store at 240 King George Road in Brantford in the spring of 2016.
The new 20,000 sq. ft. store marks the 20th Farm Boy location in Ontario.
The project is one of the largest construction initiatives in Brantford in 2015. Vicano Developments Ltd. received a $1 million building permit, following earlier permits for the building’s foundation and outer shell.
There was controversy before construction started. Neighbours originally objected, concerned about traffic and noise. These were resolved but Northridge Properties, which owns Northridge Plaza at 265 King George Rd,, maintained its objection to the Farm Boy development, The Brantford Expositor reported. There is a Food Basics store at the Northridge Plaza.
At issue was the status of Farm Boy – is it a supermarket, which the city’s zoning regulations wouldn’t allow on the property or a fresh produce outlet which is allowed on the site?
In the end, the OMB ruled in favour of the development.
