Major excavation work is underway at four future stations on the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension (ECWE), marking a key milestone in the project that will extend rapid transit farther west across Toronto and into Mississauga.

Crews have started excavation for underground station structures — known as station boxes — at future stops along Eglinton Avenue West at Martin Grove Road, Kipling Avenue, Islington Avenue and Royal York Road. These underground structures will form the main bodies of the stations, providing space for platforms, passenger areas and transit systems.

In total, seven new stations will be added to the future Line 5 Eglinton route. They will be located at Jane Street, Scarlett Road, Royal York Road, Islington Avenue, Kipling Avenue, Martin Grove Road and Renforth Drive.

The project is expected to support about 4,600 jobs annually during construction, including positions for engineers, tradespeople, equipment operators and other workers.

Work is also progressing on other major components of the extension. Crews recently completed excavation of the first of two 500-metre tunnels connecting Pearen Park to Mount Dennis Station, while construction continues on a 1.5-kilometre elevated guideway that will carry trains through part of the route.

The Government of Canada is contributing about $1.8 billion for construction of the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension.
