I have just set up a new media sponsorship of the Explore the Trades Event in Orillia on May 27.

As a member of The Orillia and District Construction Association I learned they are co-operating with the Orillia Manufacturers Association and local school districts in organizing a special skilled trades education awareness event. With the large sector of construction companies involved that I would like to do business with it made sense for me to offer to promote the event and use this as a starting point to form new relationships.

A letter to potential exhibitors I received last month described the Explore the Trades Event as an opportunity to “connect with students and showcase the talent and capabilities of our local industry leaders, while promoting awareness of career opportunities right here in our own backyard.”

The event at the Orillia District Collegiate and Vocational Institute (ODCVI/Park) will be set up in a trade show type format with students rotating through the show throughout the day and evening, organizers say in the letter describing the program.
“To reach as many students as possible, the school boards are assisting in the co-ordination of busing for secondary students currently enrolled in, or interested in, skilled trades programs throughout the morning and early afternoon,” the letter says. “Additionally, Grade 8 students and their parents, as well as post-secondary students will be invited to attend the evening portion of the show.
“Local organizations will be on-hand to provide information on scholarship and apprenticeship opportunities, as well as supplementary learning and training possibilities. Exhibitors are encouraged to bring hands-on samples of machinery and products to engage the next generation of students (and potential future employees!)”
Watch for ads appearing in our May issue and online, articles and additional coverage in June and July reports showcasing how successful the event actually was. For more information about attending you can call Stephanie Stanton at (705) 329-0444.
