Port Hope Carpenters Union local contributes $35,000 for Fleming college trades and technology centre in Peterborough

Special to the GTA Construction Report

The Carpenters Union in Port Hope (Loc. 397) has donated $35,000 towards Fleming College’s fundraising campaign for the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre (KTTC) under construction at the Sutherland Campus in Peterborough.

“The Carpenters Union is supporting the Kawartha Trades and Technology Centre, seeing the new facility as a great promotion in attracting young people into the trades,” said Joel Neville, local union co-ordinator. “The new facility will provide more room and resources, not only for our carpenter apprentices but for the apprentices of many other trades using this great new facility.”

To recognize Loc. 397’s contribution, the Campus Terrace within the KTTC will be named for the union, which represents the skilled trades – including carpentry, drywall and resilient flooring — in the Lakeshore area.

The 87,000 sq. ft.  KTTC will be completed in the fall and house Fleming’s trades and technology programs.

The college’s president, Tony Tilly, said the “generous donation” from Loc. 397 “shows both a dedication to the training of future skilled trades professionals and a belief in Fleming College’s objective of providing a state-of-the-art training facility that will have a positive impact on the workforce of Ontario.”
