Niagara Sustainability Initiative (NSI) held its first event of the 2013-2014 season on Sept. 25at White Oaks Resort in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The kick-off event focused on increasing employee awareness and engagement at various workplace sustainability initiatives. NSI program manager Katrina Kroeze says having employees participate and lead green teams and sustainability projects is critical to the success of the organization’s Carbon Project partners’ journey towards sustainability.

Keynote speaker Jeremiah Brenner, manager of corporate social responsibility (CSR) at LoyaltyOne (AIR MILES Rewards Program), addressed the audience about the challenges and successes LoyaltyOne has achieved in building a green culture. Annually, LoyaltyOne releases a CSR report in which its environmental focus is on reducing its own carbon footprint as well as influencing, promoting, and demonstrating changes in behavior that inspires others to do the same.

The next NSI monthly event, set for October, will address energy efficiencies. For more information about NSI, the events it hosts and the Carbon Project, visit www.niagarasustainability.org or email info@niagarasustainability.org.
