Niagara Sustainability Initiative (NSI) hosted a social event on Jan. 15 at Niagara College’s Wine Visitor and Education Centre. The “Get to Know NSI” event was open to the public and attracted more than 100 registered visitors, showing the growing support and interest for the sustainability movement in Niagara. Members, sponsors, volunteers and directors, along with representatives of interested organizations gathered to discuss the initiative’s growing resources and network as well as new revelations in Ontario carbon policy.
The event showcased NSI’s flagship program, the Carbon Project as well what NSI says are benefits that can be gained through participation including: access to a full season of events, both educational forums and technical workshops. A Green Team Guide, and Directory of Sustainable Initiatives were introduced as some of the exclusive resource document designed by NSI specifically to serve the needs of members. Additionally, Leadership Niagara participated in the open-house to receive feedback for growth and improvement of the Carbon Project.
At the event, founder Evan DiValentino spoke, on behalf of the NSI’s board of directors, about the changing landscape of sustainable management. He said that five years ago, it would have been unimaginable to garner so much interest in an event promoting carbon emission reductions in the region. The vision of a collaborative community shaping a sustainable future in the region is slowly being realized through NSI, he said.
“NSI is hopeful that more and more environmentally conscious organizations will realize the value of committing to carbon reductions,” the organization said in a news release. “We reflect that hope in the theme of this year’s Annual Report “Shaping a Sustainable Future: Community, Leadership, Responsibility, Motivation.”
The next NSI event, “Green Decision Making” has been scheduled for Feb. 24 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Riverstone Event Centre in Welland.
A panel of speakers will be invited to share their experiences in successfully implementing green decisions at their place of work. For details visit niagarasustainability.org/events/
