The Regional Municipality of Peel has marked the start of construction on Byngmount Shores, a seven-storey affordable rental housing development in Mississauga’s Lakeview neighbourhood.

Officials held a groundbreaking at 970 East Ave. The development will include 150 rental homes, including family-sized units, as well as ground-floor community space.

Peel Housing Corporation will own and operate the building and has been a core partner in planning and delivering the project.

Construction has begun with design-builder Martinway Developments Ltd. leading the work. The project is expected to be completed in 2028.

The development is supported by funding from all levels of government, including the Government of Canada through Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Ontario’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (Ontario), the Regional Municipality of Peel and the City of Mississauga.

Byngmount Shores is also identified as a key action in Peel Region’s 10-year housing and homelessness plan, which focuses on building affordable homes near transit, schools, services and employment.

The project’s name was chosen by Stephen Dasko, who represents the Lakeview area on Mississauga council, in reference to a former school that once operated in the neighbourhood.

“Byngmount Shores shows what can be achieved when every order of government stands behind a shared commitment to expand affordable housing,” said Nando Iannicca, chair and chief administrative officer of the Regional Municipality of Peel.”
