The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, has recognized the City of Pickering for achieving Milestone 5, the last step of the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program at the 2015 FCM Sustainable Communities Conference.
The PCP program is a network of 270 Canadian municipal governments that have committed to reducing greenhouse gases (GHG) and acting on climate change. Pickering is one of only 24 other municipalities in Canada to have achieved this distinction.
The program is based on a five-milestone framework:
- Create a GHG emissions inventory and forecast
- Set an emissions reductions target.
- Develop a local action plan.
- Implement the local action plan or a set of activities.
- Monitor progress and report results.
“Achieving Milestone 5 is a significant accomplishment and demonstrates our commitment to moving Pickering forward as a more vibrant, healthy and livable community,” said Mayor Dave Ryan.
Together, PCP members have invested over $2.3 billion to date towards mitigating climate change, implementing more than 800 green projects or measures, and reducing greenhouse gases by 1.8 million tonnes.
