Infrastructure Ontario and Joseph Brant Hospital announced on Dec. 18 that EllisDon Infrastructure JBH Inc. has signed a fixed-price $353.6 million contract to design, build and finance the hospital’s expansion and redevelopment project. EllisDon will begin to mobilize on-site immediately.

Once the project is finished, the Burlington community will have improved access to a larger, modern hospital and more single patient rooms, an Infrastructure Ontario news release says.  “The approach is consistent with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s design guidelines to meet the highest standards for infection prevention and control and quality patient care.”

Project highlights include:

  • New seven-storey patient care tower
  • 172 new beds
  • New emergency department
  • Nine new operating rooms
  • A post-anesthetic care unit
  • New and expanded cancer clinic
  • Expanded ambulatory care programs
  • Renovated level 2B neo-natal intensive care unit
  • Expanded diagnostic imaging services
  • Expanded medical, surgical and outpatient services
  • A new main entrance

IO says the hospital project “underwent an open, fair and competitive procurement process. EllisDon Infrastructure JBH Inc. submitted the proposal that delivers the best value for Ontario taxpayers.”

At the peak of construction, there will be approximately 250 to 300 workers on-site. EllisDon estimates that approximately 50 to 75 per cent of the labour for the project will come from the Burlington area.

The contract commits EllisDon Infrastructure JBH Inc. to design, build and finance the Joseph Brant Hospital expansion and redevelopment project, which will be paid using both an interim completion payment and substantial completion payment. The contract guarantees a fixed price and a fixed-delivery date for the expansion and redevelopment of the hospital.

Construction is expected to be complete in fall 2018.
